"'Cause breakin up is hard to do...sha na na na na na..."
by logansrun inladies and gents:.
how do you end a relationship with someone kindly and efficaciously?
limit your answers to relationships with someone you have been seeing for under 3 months.

If you are breking up with her, but still want to be on good terms and you still respect her, be honest about why you don't think it's right, and stay away from justifying it! For you, Brad, I'll say that again :) DO NOT JUSTIFY IT. Simply be clear about what you want. "I think you want this in a relationship, and I know I want that in a relationship, so it's best for us to part as friends and go find who we're meant to be with". (I don't care if you beleive in fate or not, Brad, say it JUST LIKE THAT...) No reasoning needs to be involved - this is 100% about what you want!
In situations that have deteriorated and a good outcome is impossible, I always liked John Malkovich's line in Dangerous Liasons: "It's beyond my control." <Repeat>
As with many things, it's less important how you do it and more important that you do it without dilly-dallying when you are clear that it's the right thing to do.

How Do You Recognize and Understand God?
by Blueblades insince mere words do not suffice and personal experience is just that.and since the act of knowing, reaching and touching god defies all words, and one has never had that personal experience, what then?.
do life and death questions remain unanswered and answered if you believe in a belief system based on the written word of others and then your own leaf of faith?.
since there have been centuries of change in the social, political, language, geographical and religious fields and schools of thought, the current bible is incomplete, many books have been deleted from it in order to preserve the church's power.the most glaring purge was at the ecumenical council of 325ce.. there isn't much left to answer the question except death itself.we buried my brother yesterday and i wonder if he finally has his answer.. blueblades

Cigarettes
by Beans inwhen you left the jw's did you start smoking cigarettes or had you already started smoking cigarettes before?
and for those who became jw's later on in life, were you smoking cigarettes before joing the organization and was it hard to stop?
and now how many cigarettes do you smoke a day?
-
Phantom Stranger
I smoked my first cigarette the night that my father died of cancer. I was 34 years old.
Since, I have probably smoked six cigs. Only when drinking, usually when drinking with a plan (i.e., to get trashed.)

Is There Anything That You Are Afraid To Talk About?
by Blueblades inone thing for now that i'm afraid to talk about is who i really am on this forum.there are various reasons for this fear and i suppose that it means that the wt.society still has some control over me.. i really want to open up and reveal my real name and address and picture and family and history etc.and connect with others who may know me and are on this forum.
one day i will, but now is not that day.. is there anything that you are afraid to talk about?.

I tend not to put personal data on the net anyway - too many things can happen to it.

talesin, totally apart from my personal worldviews, how can any subject be examined in that manner by academia?
We all have our beliefs - I haven't voiced my personal beliefs about rape, btw - but isn't the job of academics to question and explore? We can't expect them to land on an explanation that works for us, even at a very deep level, and then just quit, can we?

I thought the aggression thing was a done deal - apparently there's still reasonsed debate in the academic comunity. Here are Pro and Con web pages at CSUN:
http://www.csun.edu/~psy453/rapmot_y.htm Data supporting the aggression model.
http://www.csun.edu/~psy453/rapmot_n.htm Data questioning the aggression model.
Lots of data links on the topic: http://www.rainn.org/statistics.html

Personal Goals......
by flower infound this linked from one of the jw sites.
is'nt it interesting how things like reading the actual bible and becoming a more loving husband are all the way at the bottom.
i guess they arent as important as cleaning the hall or sending them money and not nearly as important as going to meetings and reading their books so the indoctrinization can begin.

Oddly enough, one of the things I never learned to do as a JW was set goals in life.
I took a class ten years after leaving the WTS, and they asked us to set four personal and professional goals for ourselves, and I struggled! The old mindset of just getting by and not looking towards the future was still with me in many ways! I also had beliefs from childhood that good things would only happen for me by accident, since most everything I wanted as a kid never came to pass... but that's another story.
Now I very rarely don't have a list of goals in mind and written on the board or in a notebook, or posted on the bathroom mirror.
Current goals (all these are by February 4th, 90 days from when I set them):
- Get down to 200 pounds.
- Sell one article to a magazine I haven't sold to before
- Finish two book proposals
- Find the house my fiancee and I want to buy, execute a purchase agreement, and have attractive financing approved
- Submit a draft of my screenplay
- Do 25 sessions/classes of yoga (which I've done before), and do 10 meditation classes (which I haven't done at all before)
So when you see me on this fricking board, ask me if I shouldn't be working ! :)

Oh, I was one of those obnoxious geeks that all the parents wanted their daughters to marry and none of the daughters could stand.
Fortunately, I've gone through intensive cool training.
